Our Philosophy

For almost four decades, the label “Bioskop” has been standing for sophisticated and entertaining movies. In this tradition, we keep striving to acknowledge current trends and capture subjects of topical interest that reach a wide audience, within as well as beyond the borders of Germany, and regardless of their date of origin. Many Bioskop movies became classics, like for example “Die Blechtrommel” (“The Tin Drum”) by Volker Schlöndorff, “Die Bleierne Zeit” (“Marianne and Juliane” aka “Les Années de Plomb”) by Margarethe von Trotta or “Die Verrohung des Franz Blum” (“The Brutalization of Franz Blum”) by Reinhard Hauff. But also movies like “alaska.de” by Esther Gronenborn, “Der alte Affe Angst” (“Angst”) by Oskar Roehler and “Das wilde Leben” (“Eight Miles High”) by Achim Bornhak already found their place in younger German film history.

We are interested in different perspectives and always try to look at topics of current social interest from an angle other than the mainstream. To us, filmmaking means careful individual craftswork. We combine a sense for interesting subjects and their development with profound economical know-how and extensive production experience. Marketing concepts and promotional measures come into play at a very early stage and already influence our choice of projects, they grow and develop carefully in alliance with the stories and screenplays. Good ideas are our motivation, and a professional concept is the first step towards making a movie. Our ability to preserve a fresh, open-minded view in storytelling, and to lead the production process in an economically efficient way is the key to our success. We are aware of our responsibility as creative ambitious producers and we will carry on the tradition of high quality filmmaking. Nonetheless, a commercial exploitation is the goal we pursue for all our movies. The production costs of a movie must be financed by its exploitation. No matter if national cinema productions, international coproductions, innovative TV formats or projects for the new media – we are open to follow the progress of the market and gladly welcome any new challenge. We always seek innovation and new ways to go – in close collaboration with the creative staff, our financiers and clients.
